My Favorite Sounds of the Season

It's now officially the Christmas season! Woo hoo!

You may hate me for saying this, but I actually do not mind seeing Christmas trees and lights up even before Thanksgiving. Because for me, the Christmas season really begins with Thanksgiving. And as the song goes, it's the most WONDERFUL time of the year!

One of the main reasons I get giddy this time of year is that I love, love, LOVE Christmas music. And just for giggles, I've decided to post 5 of my favorites for your enjoyment.

In no particular order...

1. The Christmas Song
My favorite version of this tune is sung by Michael Buble, who, truth be told, I could listen to ALL THE TIME. He is phenomenal. The Hubby and I were sitting around watching YouTube videos the other night of Michael Buble singing, and reminiscing about his concert at the CenturyTel Center in February 2008. I think we both knew it would be a good show, but I don't think either of us realized just how great a performer Buble really is. We had such a fun time at that concert! We both agreed that the next time Buble comes within a 200 mile radius we will be the first in line to buy tickets.

2. Baby it's Cold Outside
This is simply a cool tune. (Pun intended.) And it holds a special place in my heart, because at my "Linnea and Friends" show at the Dixie Theater in 2006, my husband and I sang this duet. I would post that particular video for you to enjoy, but I think he might kill me. Besides, I think leaving Dean Martin out of this list would be tragic.

3. Merry Christmas, Darling
Okay, I realize that many folks think Karen Carpenter's music is cheesy. But in my humble opinion, this is one of the best Christmas songs ever recorded. I have no idea why this video is so blurry, but the voice is still crystal clear.

4. What Child is This
I have such fond memories of listening to two very special people practice and then perform this song at St. George's Church in Bossier City when I was a small child. I also love the lyrics. "This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing..."

My favorite version of this song is actually done by Selah, but I couldn't find a video. This, however, is a really good version by Third Day.

5. O' Holy Night
You just can't list great Christmas songs without mentioning this one. This version is by Selah.

Yes. Yes, yes, yes, yes --great choices. You can sit around my Christmas tree anytime. BTW I loved the Third Day video--they're on of my very favorites.

Hello Linnea,

You certainly know how to pick em.! Starting with Michael singing the Christmas song. What an incredible talent singing Mel Torme's gift to the world. I love going to concerts and missed seeing Michael when he was here,, but I vow to catch him next time.

Dean Martin.. Listening to him sing just takes away any stress I have.. I recall being in school years ago and "sneaking" into the teachers lounge to get a coke out of their machine.. I over heard all these female teachers talking about how sexy Dean was.. two of these teachers I had a crush on.. I think thats when I realized just how much of an impact old Deano had on his female admirers.

It's uncanny that you picked Karen Carpenter's classic . I too love this song and I get sad everytime I hear it because it reminds me of how much I miss that truly talented lady.. Such a tragic loss.

O Holy Night has got to be at the top of my list. I had never heard of this rendition until now and I loved it. I also like Josh Grobin's version as well... Heck I wish I could have heard your hubby and you sing "Baby it's cold outside" I didn't know he could sing too. I just knew him to be the southern male version of Erma Bombeck....haha!! I Loved his column.

Some day you should check out my daughter's blog.. It's in this same Blog format as yours. She's a former broadcaster as well and has the most adorable family next to yours. "April Maus." .Again thanks for writing

To Lisa - Thanks, Friend! It's hard to pick just five, especially since I was SO enjoying go through the YouTube videos. But these were the songs that have stuck with me since I was little.

To Rick - you really should try to catch Buble. He's tremendously talented. The only bad part of the show was that he has a bit of a potty-mouth, which didn't bother me, really, since I have 4 brothers and have been involved with sports in some aspect for the majority of my life. So, I've heard it all, and I just attributed his language to the fact that he's a big Canadian kid. Aside from that, he was great. He was really funny and can sing just about anything very well.

Deano was the coolest EVER. Not much more to say here.

Karen Carpenter - I loved her. Her voice had such warmth and sincerity.

AND... I just read some of your daughter's blog! She's awesome! I really liked the post about Biblical parenting. Very good information. Please wish her well for me!
